The history of Rosewood Downs

History

Before it became a residential estate, Rosewood Downs was farmland.

The area grew where two farming properties met — commonly remembered as the Rosewood and Rosmoyne/Rosemine farms. The early homesteads once stood along Surrey Road with some historic properties dating back more than a century.

The land was subdivided for housing in the late 1960s, transforming the area into the suburban estate seen today. Early homes from this period still define the character of many streets.

A few remnants of the past remain, including original farmhouses on Surrey Road and Janmarra Court, which are estimated to be around 120 years old.

Timeline.

  • The area that locals now call Rosewood Downs was originally farmland, with early homesteads/farmhouses (stories commonly reference Surrey Rd and Janmarra Ct as among the oldest properties).

Local memory describes this pocket as where two farms met (often recalled as “Rosewood” and “Rosmoyne/Rosemine”), with the “Rosewood” name sticking most strongly in community identity.

  • Through much of the mid-century, the land remained semi-rural, with farmhouses and larger allotments before suburbanisation reached the area.

  • Locals point to the late 1960s as the period when the original subdivision took shape, transforming paddocks into residential streets and court layouts.

  • The estate identity solidifies: residents start calling the pocket Rosmoyne Park / Rosewood Downs, gradually shortening to Rosewood Downs over time.

The name is reinforced through community anchors like Rosewood Downs Primary School (named after the subdivision/estate).

  • Houses change hands less often as long-term residents raise families locally.

Large family homes, court locations, and established trees/gardens start to define the “feel” locals still talk about.

  • The name isn’t official, but it’s widely used in the community (noticeboards, local conversations, even some property marketing).

Current listings on major platforms still describe homes as being in the “Rosewood Downs Estate” and call it a tightly held pocket.
